Debunking some of the myths about tinned food

We often get asked why Miraculous Meals comes in tins, so we wanted to take the time to dispel some of the myths surrounding tinned food.

Myth 1 - To stay fresh tinned food requires artificial preservatives

Tinned food stays fresh because it’s cooked in a sealed tin, killing all bacteria. And because the tin is airtight the contents can stay fresh for a long period of time without spoiling. This makes food in tins arguably the safest food available.

Miraculous Meals contains zero artificial preservatives

Myth 2 - Tinned foods are highly processed

Tinned food needs no more of less processing than frozen or fresh food. The amount of processing is up to the manufacturer. Some of the highest quality and freshest product are sold in tins with zero processing. Sardines for example.

Our ingredients aren't pre-processed

Myth 3 – Tinned food is not as nutritious as frozen food

Research shows the process of putting food in tins preserves nutrients and flavour to the same levels as freezing food (1). What impacts all food is excess heat in the cooking process which reduces the nutritional value and alters the natural flavour.

We gently steam our food to lock in the flavour and goodness

Myth 4 – Tinned food is poor quality food

Historically quite a few value products have been made in tins. This has given the perception that tinned food is low quality. The problem has never been the tin but what’s in it. In fact, you can even get Michelin Starred meals in a tin – check it out

We use only 100% real meat, fruit and vegetables

A few other reasons to love the humble old tin

Tins are more environmentally friendly

Tins are easy to recycle, fully recyclable and can be infinitely recycled with no loss of quality. Tinned food also uses less energy to store and transport and has a long shelf life which reduces food wastage. This is a super power of the tin as food waste has a huge environmental impact with 1/3 of all food produced globally spoiling before consumption. And research shows that you agree with us! (2)

Tins are more cost effective

While tinned food has all the same nutritional benefits of frozen food a huge benefit is that it’s more cost effective. Why? The process of preserving food in tins is super-efficient and because it doesn’t need to be stored and transported frozen you’re only really paying for the contents not the logistics.

In short, we love the humble old tin and we know your dog will love what’s inside ours. Don’t forget each Miraculous Meal fed helps change the life of a dog in need. Just another reason to feel good about our tins that are packed full of love, inside and out.
